Who Is Axwell? The Swedish DJ Behind the Mafia

If you have danced to Swedish house music in the last twenty years, you have almost certainly danced to Axwell. Here is a short guide to the DJ behind our designs, from the Axwell Merch crew.

Who is Axwell?

Axwell is Axel Christofer Hedfors, a Swedish DJ, producer and remixer. He was born on 18 December 1977 and grew up in Lund, in the south of Sweden. His sound sits in progressive, electro and funky house, and he runs his own label, Axtone Records.

How did it start?

First tracks. As a teenager he made music in the tracker scene under the name Quazar, and put out an EP as OXL in 1995.

Solo hits. "Feel the Vibe" came out in 2004 and topped the UK Dance chart in 2005, "Watch the Sunrise" followed in 2005, and "I Found U" reached No. 6 in the UK in 2007.

What is Swedish House Mafia?

Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso first played as Swedish House Mafia in 2007 and became a full group in late 2008. The trio gave us:

  • "One (Your Name)" and "Miami 2 Ibiza" (2010)
  • "Save the World" (2011)
  • "Don't You Worry Child" (2012), their only UK No. 1

They split after a final show at Ultra Miami in 2013, came back at the same festival in 2018, and released their first studio album, Paradise Again, in 2022.

And Axwell Λ Ingrosso?

During the break, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso worked as a duo. Axwell Λ Ingrosso debuted in 2014, and "Sun Is Shining" went to No. 1 in Sweden in 2015. Their album More Than You Know followed in 2017.

Anything else?

Axwell's remixes earned him two Grammy nominations for Best Remixed Recording, one for "Sweet Disposition" with Dirty South and one for "In My Mind".
